My Work

My Work

I design lettering that can be carved in a variety of wood, stone and slate, including Purbeck and Portland limestones from Dorset, Yorkstone and Welsh and Cumbrian slates. My work ranges from public art to unique gifts for special anniversaries, weddings or birthdays. Hand-carved lettering is beautiful in gardens and the home and is also the ideal way to commemorate a loved one. Memorial art is an especially important part of my work; examples can be seen in the 'Hand-carved Headstones' page for examples.

Hand-carved lettering is a perfect antidote to our hectic lives as it allows us to pause and reflect, if only for a few moments. My main motivation for creating my work is to create spaces for contemplation, to slow the pace of life down and to generate a feeling of calm and peacefulness. This can be achieved in our own private spaces but also in the public sphere, as the accompaning pages of examples of my public art will explain in more detail.

My workshop is situated in the grounds of Parndon Mill, Harlow. This beautiful semi-rural location is a wonderful environment to create my work in, not just becuase of the tranquility it affords, but also because of the community of around thirty other artists and makers that work there. The collaborative approach that many of us adopt in our working practises creates an inspiring atmosphere and allows for a greater diversity of work to be created. See for example the seat made for Scott's Grotto, which was only made possible by the skilled work of Alan Freeman of Parndon Mill Forge. Prospective clients are very welcome to visit my workshop by appointment and every year in September, Parndon Mill holds its renowned Open Studios weekend which everyone is welcome to attend so they can meet the artists and other creatives in their own workspaces.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my work and I hope you feel inspired by what you find here.
